Balfour Beatty joins forum to increase use of BIM in UK

Balfour Beatty has become one of the founding members of BIM4Infrastructure UK (BIM4IUK), a new industry forum which aims to put Building Information Modelling, (BIM), into practice across the construction industry.

BIM is an intelligent model-based process that provides insight for creating and managing building and infrastructure projects faster, more economically, and with less environmental impact.

BIM4IUK is a Special Interest Group within the Association of Geographic Information (AGI) and is supported by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Government BIM Task Group and the Construction Project Information (CPI) Committee.

Balfour Beatty has implemented BIM on projects such as the £592 million Terminal 2b project at London Heathrow International Airport which resulted in improved coordination with over 30 active stakeholders through 13 interfacing projects and enabled a peak workforce of 1,600 to complete work ahead of schedule.

Last year Balfour Beatty signed a £8 million agreement with Autodesk to increase its use of BIM, Peter Trebilcock, BIM Director at Balfour Beatty, said: "BIM provides us with major opportunities to improve UK infrastructure through better design integration, shorter programmes, safety improvements and supply chain engagement.

"We are determined to give our customers the very best levels of service and to us that means making sure that we use the very latest in BIM technology and practices".
