Balfour Beatty has collected more awards than any other contractor at this year's prestigious CEEQUAL Outstanding Achievement Awards, scooping six out of the total twelve sustainability accolades.
The awards held at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London are designed to reward best practice achievements in improving sustainability of civil engineering, infrastructure, landscaping and the public realm. From a total of 45 applications and 15 finalists Balfour Beatty picked up six awards and three 'highly commended' recognitions.
The awards given to Balfour Beatty and its partners were for: Project Management for the M25 Widening J16-23 & J27-30 & Hatfield Tunnel Refurbishment, (this project also won the Land Use category), Water Management and Averting Flood Risk on the Bickershaw South Infrastructure project, Energy and Carbon for the Blackfriars Bridge and Station Refurbishment, Material Use for the M74 joint venture completion project and Waste Management for the A46 Newark to Widmerpool road scheme.
Of the M25 Project Management award the judges said: "The stand out element of this submission was how the Project Team embedded CEEQUAL into the project management process in a way that enabled lessons to be learnt and behaviours changed from one phase of work to the next. This was demonstrated in the successive improvements in the CEEQUAL scores."
Of the A46 Newark to Widmerpool project they said: "It was very clear that the project management team had sustainability performance in their sights from day one on this project. The whole team working effectively with this common goal has enabled the achievement of some very high performance."
And of the M74 project and material use they said: "This project had a primary focus on the use of materials from secondary sources. The substantial majority of this was sourced locally from other projects. Achievement of this strategy also required the stabilisation of large quantities of contaminated ground."
Balfour Beatty was also highly commended for project management on the A46 Newark to Widmerpool Scheme, Ecology and Biodiversity on the A487 Porthmadog Minffordd & Tremadog Bypass scheme, and the M25 scheme was shortlisted for energy use.
