Having been the architects for the award winning conversion of the former parcel and letter sorting office, Associated Architects were keen to retain the industrial character of the existing space to be occupied in The Mailbox. A new fully glazed curtain-walling elevation to the street was installed to admit as much natural light as possible, allowing dramatic views into the space. A concept for a coloured plane folding up the wall of the reception space and spanning across the ceiling behind the curtain-walling was developed to visually link the reception space to the studio and disguise various existing services below the existing structural soffit. To reinforce the concept to ensure that it could be seen externally and internally it was decided to colour this feature in Associated Architects corporate yellow.
Associated Architects had seen Stretch Ceilings used in limited areas on various projects but had never had the opportunity to use the product in any of their own projects. Designing their own offices offered Associated Architects the perfect excuse to use a Stretch Ceiling to construct this feature and the glossy yellow fabric available as a standard colour from Stretch Ceilings was the perfect yellow.
The ceiling was expertly and quickly fitted by Stretch Ceilings, with care taken to co-ordinate and accommodate the range of feature light fittings contained within the ceiling element of the installation.
The membrane used in this installation was a Lacquer finish in Lemon. Stretch Ceilings are available in over 250 Colours and Finishes and are ideal for use in office applications as it is washable, hygienic, non-toxic, 100% recyclable and certified to the Euroclass standard achieving a B s1 d0 fire rating in accordance with EN 13501.1.
