Ash & Lacy help build a better Bletchley

1 Sep 2011
News
As part of the ‘Building a Better Bletchley’ regeneration programme undertaken by Milton Keynes Council, Bletchley Leisure Centre was recently transformed from a rundown 1970s building to a state of the art centre using Ash & Lacy Building Systems.

Zanara Envelope Solutions and architects Holder Mathias worked in conjunction with SDC Construction of Bedford to complete the £21million project, which replaced the old swimming pool and sports facilities and saw the creation of a multipurpose sports hall, dance studio, indoor bowls hall and a brand new swimming pool for the local community.

The design of the roof was a special feature and a notable focal point for the centre. The striking exposed mono-pitched roof was tapered along the side of the building and featured another fall from one side of the roof to the other. In order to provide an aesthetically pleasing solution that also met all the technical project requirements, Ash & Lacy Ashzip insulated acoustic standing seam was chosen as the ideal roofing option. Ash & Lacy was specified by Zanara Envelope Solutions in conjunction with the architects as it complied with the design brief and the requirements for a complete insulation; acoustic and secret fix roofing system, which had to be installed within a high condensation environment over the swimming pool.

For the roof, 1730m² of Ashzip stucco embossed standing seam was used, along with acoustic insulation and aluminium liner sheets.

The restricted access on site meant that the delivery of pre-formed roofing would be difficult, if not impossible. To overcome this potential problem, Ash & Lacy supplied an on-site rolling station which meant that the (compact) coils of unfinished metal could be processed at ground level and craned directly into position. During the manufacturing and installation processes Ash & Lacy technical personnel made regular site visits to ensure that the project was completed to the very highest standards.

Director of Zanara Envelope Solutions, Anand Rai, commented: ‘Ashzip is not only a cost effective solution that does not compromise on quality, but Ash & Lacy also provides technical and on-site support during the course of the contract. An advantage of this was the option to roll the sheets on site. Site access meant it was not possible to deliver full length sheets at Bletchley but with Ashzip it was possible to install the sheets in one length without having to form on site welded end laps which can be costly’.

Zanara Envelope Solutions enjoyed recognition for the Bletchley Leisure Centre project by winning the roofing category at the Ash & Lacy Awards 2010.
