Architectural Art Achieved with Kirkstone Natural Slate

19 Aug 2010
News
Kirkstone, the specialists in natural Cumbrian slate and durable, high-quality architectural stone, has worked closely with acclaimed artist Susanna Heron to provide its Brathay Blue Black slate for an 80m covered pedestrian walkway, ‘Art Street’, at City Inn’s flagship hotel in Westminster.

The tone, texture and natural characteristics of Kirkstone’s high-quality Brathay slate, which includes a fine gold thread of iron oxide, provided the perfect canvas for Susanna to create a unique piece of art. The ‘Elements’ installation showcases the versatility of Kirkstone’s natural slate, from typical commercial applications for interior flooring, cladding and specialist fabrications through to, exterior landscaping and façades.

Kirkstone worked alongside Susanna and architects Bennetts Associates to fabricate the distinctive and unusual Brathay Blue Black cladding panels. Integrating art and architecture using Kirkstone’s natural slate products provided a beautiful and natural finish which met the ambitious designs for the scheme.

Nick Fecitt, Managing Director of Kirkstone comments:

“Whilst this was not a typical use for our Brathay slate, we’re absolutely thrilled with the results. We believe that inspirational design and architecture begins with an idea that is then crafted and turned into reality using the very best materials. By providing the medium for inspiring art within architectural design, architects can add a unique and distinctive touch to any project.

“The natural characteristics of our quarried Lake District slate offer the industry an exceptional opportunity to create something different and strike a chord with evermore discerning clients. To showcase the adaptability of our natural slate on such an architecturally impressive project is something we’re very proud of.”
