An ideas competition invited architecture students around the world to consider what the city might be like in 50 years time. Organised to celebrate 50 years of the Commonwealth Association of Architects, the RIBA-managed competition not only reveals potential preoccupations of next-generation architects but also the visual techniques that deliver their imagination. The winner, John Cook, produced an outstanding piece of work. It not only responded to the brief with detailed analysis and drawings but also placed the growth and decay of his futuristic proposal in an even larger perspective of space and time. His exacting drawings were backed up by detailed data. The competition was inspired by the UK Government’s Foresight Future of Cities project.
